Tyre pressure is the cheapest maintenance on a car and the most neglected. It costs nothing to correct, it affects fuel consumption, braking distance, tyre life and handling, and most cars on Indian roads are running on it wrong.
The reason isn't ignorance. It's friction — the ordinary kind. Checking pressure means finding a fuel station with a working air machine, queueing behind three other cars, and trusting a gauge that may not have been calibrated in years. So people don't do it, or do it every few months when a tyre looks visibly low.
Why "looks fine" doesn't work
A radial tyre can lose a significant share of its pressure before there's any visible change in how it sits. By the time a tyre looks flat, it is severely underinflated and has already been damaged.
Tyres also lose pressure on their own, continuously, without any puncture — air permeates slowly through the rubber. Heat accelerates it, which means Indian summers accelerate it. Add one temperature swing between seasons and a tyre that was correct in March can be meaningfully low by June.
What underinflation actually costs
Four things, in rough order of how much they'll hurt:
- Tyre life. An underinflated tyre flexes more in the sidewall and rides on its outer shoulders. You get uneven wear across the tread and a tyre that needs replacing well before it should — an expensive consequence of a free fix.
- Braking and handling. The contact patch deforms, which lengthens stopping distances and makes the car vaguer in an emergency lane change.
- Fuel consumption. More rolling resistance means more fuel to cover the same distance.
- Heat and blowout risk. Sidewall flex generates heat. At sustained highway speed in Indian summer temperatures, a badly underinflated tyre is a genuine failure risk.
Overinflation causes its own problems — a harsh ride, a smaller contact patch, and wear concentrated down the centre of the tread — so the goal is correct, not high.
Where to find the right pressure
Not on the tyre. The number moulded into the sidewall is the maximum the tyre can safely hold, not the pressure your car should run.
The correct figure is set by the vehicle manufacturer and printed on a sticker, usually inside the driver's door jamb, sometimes on the fuel flap or in the owner's manual. It often lists two figures — a normal load value and a higher one for a fully loaded car. If you're driving five people and luggage to the hills, use the loaded figure.
Check when the tyres are cold
This is the detail that undoes most roadside checks.
Driving heats the air inside a tyre, and hot air reads higher. Check pressure after even a few kilometres and you'll get an inflated reading, conclude the tyre is fine, and drive away underinflated. Manufacturer figures always assume cold tyres.
"Cold" means the car has been standing for at least three hours, or has been driven less than about a kilometre. In practice that means first thing in the morning, before you go anywhere — which is precisely why owning an inflator at home changes the outcome. The fuel station is, by definition, a place you arrive at with hot tyres.
Why a home inflator is worth it
Three reasons beyond convenience.
You can check cold, in your parking space, in two minutes. You get a consistent gauge rather than a different, uncalibrated fuel-station machine each time. And you have the means to reinflate a slow puncture enough to reach a workshop, instead of waiting for help on a highway shoulder.

How to use one
- Check with the car cold, on level ground.
- Find the recommended pressure on the door jamb sticker.
- Remove the valve cap and keep it somewhere you won't lose it.
- Plug the inflator into the 12V socket. On most units the engine should be running, or at least the ignition on, to avoid draining the battery.
- Set the preset pressure, attach the connector squarely to the valve, and switch on. A brief hiss while connecting is normal.
- Let it stop at the preset figure, disconnect, refit the cap.
- Repeat for all four — and check the spare, which is the tyre everyone forgets and the one you'll want when it matters.
A note on duty cycle: most portable 12V inflators are designed to run for a limited period before resting. Topping up four tyres is well within that. Inflating a completely flat tyre from zero is harder work, so let the unit cool if it gets hot.
How often
Once a month is a reasonable rhythm for most drivers, plus before any long drive and at the start of a season change. Summer heat and monsoon temperature swings both move pressures around more than people expect.
If one tyre consistently needs more air than the others, that's not something to keep topping up — it's a slow puncture or a valve leak, and it needs a workshop.
